The new semester started and our first class was awesome.
Our LBS 707 - Information Literacy Education tackles the concept of Information Literacy in all its aspects.

How honoured is our class that we are only the second set of students whom is taught this new course for Information Literacy Education in the entire continent of A-F-R-I-C-A- 😄

Information Literacy is the ability to know when there is a need for information and to be able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand. For example, when one is handed an assignment one needs to know what ones information need is and then know how one is going to gather that information needed. One would also need to analyse the source that one is using in order to evaluate if the source is reliable or not.

Information literacy is a term that was coined in the 1970's and has undergone transformtions to keep it current and relevant. Unlike 'technological literacy' or 'computer literacy' or 'computer literacy' and 'ICT literacy' it is not technologically related, nor is it a corrective to an existing literacy. It is not dependant on any one technology or set of technologies, 'information literacy' has been eagerly taken on board by librarians and governments.

In class we were taught about teacher librarians. It is an individual who holds both recognised teaching qualifications and qualifications in librarianship. Teacher-librarians are important to education due to their combined knowledge of teaching, curriculum, library and information management. They are very important in the academic library as they assist students on how to acquire and assimilate knowledge to use in their personal and professional lives and learn how to make their own unique contributions for expanding and improving their fields, also to learn strategies that encourage lifelong learning, rather than memorization of facts and figures and to evaluate the source of the authors authenticity on a subject.
